How much data does Deep Rock Galactic use?

how much data does deep rock galactic use

It’s possible to play Deep Rock Galactic on a mobile hotspot or fixed wireless connection since it doesn’t use much data – but while playing online games uses less internet data than many people assume, downloading and updating games like Deep Rock Galactic can eat away at a limited data plan. Here’s how much data it takes to play, download, and update Deep Rock Galactic.

Deep Rock Galactic data use

Deep Rock Galactic uses less than 50 MB of data per hour of gameplay. Because there are about 1,000 MB in every GB, the game eats through your data plan at a rate of 0.05 GB per hour. That means to use 1 GB of data, you’ll need to play the game for 20 hours.

Galactic download size

The Deep Rock Galactic download uses more data than playing the game, although it’s still not much. Here’s the file size and estimated download size for the game on Microsoft Windows:

Platform File size Estimated download size
Microsoft Windows <3 GB <1.5GB

Developers often release information about the file size, but not download size, of their games – even though the two are different. File size is the space the game takes up on your hard drive, while download size is the internet data you use downloading the game onto your computer.

So where are we getting the estimated download size? Game downloads are “packed” in archive formats like  “.zip” or “.rar” so they’re smaller and don’t take as long to download onto your computer. As a very loose rule, these files are about half the size of the unpacked file.

Deep Rock Galactic update size

Most Deep Rock Galactic patches are under 100 MB, but updates can be bigger. To avoid any surprises, turn off auto-updates in your settings and manually update the game instead. For the most up-to-date information about updates and patches, see the Deep Rock Galactic Updates.

How to reduce your data use

Does your mobile data plan have a low limit? Are you worried about exceeding your monthly data cap? Here are a few things you can do to use less data while playing Deep Rock :

Play on a less crowded server. When there are more players in the game, your local network has to share more data with other server clients. To save data, choose to join emptier servers.

Opt for the slower server option. Most game servers have a tick rate of 64 or 128 Hz. The 128 tick servers refresh the game twice as often as the 64 tick servers – and use about twice as much data too. To reduce your data use, play on community servers with lower tick rates.

Limit your client update rate. Your client update rate is how many times per second your computer or console can process the updates it gets from the game server, regardless of whether it’s a 64 or 128 tick server. You can limit the client update rate in your computer settings to artificially limit your gaming data use – even when you’re playing on a 128 tick game server.

Turn off voice chat. Voice chat can use another 60 MB of data per hour. If you don’t use voice chat while you play, you should use less data.

Get more data with fixed wireless internet

Rural gamers who don’t have access to wired internet connections like cable or fiber can get stuck playing Deep Rock Galactic on a cellphone tether or mobile hotspot. These connections aren’t ideal for gaming, since they’re slow and usually come with limited mobile internet plans.

Are you looking for an upgrade? Fixed wireless internet is a stronger home internet connection with a higher data limit than most cellphone and hotspot plans.
